Recently, out of curiosity, I applied through the FCC website for a GMRS License. I have had an amateur license for about 12 years and I was curious about GMRS. Of course I’ve used the little walkie talkies and used some FRS radios for years depending on need. For example while supporting a biking/walking event I’ve often provided FRS radios for administrative staff on site so they could communicate more effectively with each other rather than yelling across the grounds or remembering cell numbers. I’ve also clipped one of the FRS radios on my belt or left one with Net Control so they could communicate with the amateur communicators more quickly.
I am curious how we might be able to incorporate folk with GMRS licenses into Emergency Response scenerios and public service opportunities. I’ve recently had a person sign up for one of the groups I am in and for his license he put in this (at the time) strange license configuration.
I later learned that it was a GMRS license. Ever curious I’ve started to see how it might be used.
I’ll let you know what I find out.
